Chapter 29

Mixed Feelings

MIXED emotions followed Jessica as she collected her cell phone from the sergeant. Depression followed the high at being released as she trudged along the corridor to the exit. She couldn’t help but think that her being arrested would stop her attorneys providing funding from her trust fund to buy a property. She didn’t think that now was the time to ask Jeremy. The glass door sucked open as she stepped onto the mat, only to be met by Roy. He blocked the exit with his hands on his hips.

“They’ve released you then,” he both said and signed.”

Jessica nodded at the obvious, not sure why he was there and hoping the hospital hadn’t sent him to collect her. Jeremy stepped in front of her.

“Yeah, great isn’t it? I have a good idea why they released her besides us claiming her innocence and their evidence being completely circumstantial. Anyway, I wasn’t expecting you coming down here after I spoke to you.”

“I had a call from a Detective Stone. When I told him that we communicated through signing, he said you might need my help. At least I can see to her getting home so it’s not a wasted journey.”

Jessica breathed a sigh of relief.

“Detective Stone! I wonder what his motives are in helping. I think it was information he gave me surrounding his inquiries that helped get her released, although he wasn’t specific on some matters. I had to step lightly not to get him into trouble. Regardless, yeah, you can see her home if you wouldn’t mind. She’s free as a bird.”

Jeremy took her hand and gave it a squeeze. “They know not to talk to you again without me being there, so don’t worry.”

He let go of her hand and walked over to his car. She couldn’t stop the tears welling even though she tried. Then she bawled unashamedly. Roy stepped up to her and wrapped his arms around her. She snuggled her face into his jacket, but her arms stayed limp by her sides.

“Let it all out. It‘ll soon all soon fade to a dream.”

—Dream, you mean a freakin’ nightmare.—

Her bawling turned to a sniffle. She was aware of his hand stroking the back of her head and stepped back.

—I want to go home, — she signed.

He took a handkerchief from his pocket and handed it to her. They set off to walk over to his car. Roy touched the small of her back as if to guide her in the right direction, sending an unwelcome shiver through her body. She edged to one side away from him, uncomfortable at his touch. As pleased as she was at his appearance to see her home safely, his touchy feely manner was now becoming worrying. At his car, she handed him his handkerchief. He pulled open her door and she climbed onto her seat. Jessica couldn’t look at him as he drove out of the parking lot. The last thing she wanted was him to start asking questions.

“You should be pleased,” he said.
